Brief Introduction to Emily Cox

A Portland, OR native, Emily Cox graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in May 2011 as a scholarship student of Axel Strauss. Ms. Cox also holds degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno (MM) and the University of Oregon (BM), where she studied with Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio and Kathryn Lucktenberg, respectively. Emily performs in a variety of settings, from orchestra to chamber music, the latter of which took her to Courmayeur, Italy for the 2011 Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival.
Ms. Cox currently is a member of several California orchestras, including the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Santa Maria Philharmonic (principal second violin), the Symphony of the Vines, and the Santa Cruz County Symphony. She also guest performs with the Fresno Philharmonic, Monterey Symphony, and Bakersfield Symphony, among others.
Ms. Cox, her husband and young son are fortunate to "live in paradise" on California's central coast near San Luis Obispo.

Teaching Philosophy

Playing a string instrument well (that is, with good sound, intonation, control, and interpretation) is probably about the hardest thing one can do! However, I personally believe that the larger the obstacle to overcome, the greater the reward. Music opens a lot of doors- and not just to more music! Studies show that students who learn how to play an instrument do better across the academic spectrum- from math to language skills. Additionally, they develop discipline from practicing, and (hopefully) the patience and concentration it requires to accomplish something difficult!

I like a holistic, integrative approach to learning. My goal as a teacher is to help you gain some skills in music, and at the same time explore the history, culture and beauty of timeless art.

Not to mention, have fun!! I tailor my approach to the individual needs and goals of the student, and enjoy working with kids as well as adults.
